Purim is traditionally one of the most joyous Jewish holidays, but some celebrations in Israel and hard-hit parts of the United States are being scaled back or canceled due to the coronavirus threat.

One of the biggest jolts has come in the city of New Rochelle, a few miles north of New York City, where the rabbi of the Young Israel synagogue has the virus.

The synagogue has been shut down by health authorities and all its Purim festivities canceled.

Dozens of families from the community are in self-quarantine after learning last week that one congregant, a 50-year-old lawyer, had tested positive for the virus.

Judy Aqua is one of the people who is self-quarantining.

"People are really afraid to go to the supermarket. They're afraid to go to the cleaner," said Aqua.

Aqua's husband Uri Aqua said one of their neighbors in currently in a nearby intensive care unit.

"I'm afraid to be infected and I don't want to infect anybody else," said Uri Aqua.

New York's governor, Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday he is sending the National Guard into New Rochelle to help fight the nation's biggest known cluster of coronavirus cases.

The virus has infected more than 800 people in the U.S. and killed at least 30, with one state after another recording its first infections in quick succession.

New Jersey reported ts first coronavirus death Tuesday. Worldwide, nearly 120,000 have been infected and over 4,200 have died.

For most people, the virus causes only mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.

Most people recover in a matter of weeks, as has happened with three-quarters of those infected in mainland China.
