Students threw stones at police who locked up the gates of a college in Lucknow to stop them taking to the streets, a result of allegations of police brutality at a university in New Delhi on Sunday.
The bill is an amendment to the Indian citizenship law, which would expedite citizenship for six religious minorities, including Hindus and Sikhs, from neighbouring countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, if they arrived before 2015.
Opponents are claiming the bill violates India's secular constitution, which prohibits religious discrimination, and some critics say it does not extend the same rights to Muslim migrants.
