Tensions are escalating between China and the United States, after US Senators approved a bill on protecting human rights in Hong Kong. Under the proposed legislation, Hong Kong would have to maintain a certain level of autonomy to qualify for special American trade considerations. The US Senate has also passed a second bill to ban the export of crowd-control munitions to Hong Kong police, including tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets. Both bills will now move on to the House of Representatives, which passed its own Hong Kong bill in October.
