Frequently Ask Questions About Climbing Kilimanjaro

Frequently Ask Questions About Climbing Kilimanjaro Hi and welcome to Peak Planet
In this video, we are answering
some frequently asked questions.

How many days ahead of time should I arrive?
Our group climbs have an arrival and departure day built-in.
We recommend arriving at least one day early.
This will give your body time to adjust to the time change
and to recuperate from the long flight.
It also gives you a cushion days ahead
in case your flight is canceled or delayed,
or if your bags are lost or delayed.

Where do I go once I grab my bags at JRO?
Once you pick up your bags,
You'll exit the airport
toward the parking lot.
You'll see many drivers there.
Go with the one that is holding
the sign that reads Peak Planet.

Where do I store everything I don't need on the mountain?
You can check a suitcase with your
duffel rolled up in it and use the suitcase to
store your items not need on the mountain.

We have a secure storage room
at the hotel.
Make sure items like laptops
are stored in a locking suitcase.

Should I get my visa in advance?
To gain entry into Tanzania,
US citizens and most other nationalities
will need a passport and visa.
The passport must be valid for 6 months
after the intended length of stay.
You can stand in line at JRO
for up to two hours to get your visa
or apply for it by mailing
your passport to the Tanzanian Embassy.

Do I need any vaccinations to get into Tanzania?
Vaccinations are not required
if you are coming from the US.

If you arrive from a country
that has a yellow fever outbreak,
and you are there longer than 8 hours,
you'll need a yellow fever vaccination.

What kind of bags should I bring?
When climbing Kilimanjaro,
you will need to bring at least two bags.
One should be a daypack
that you will carry during your hike.

The second bag can be a duffle bag
This bag should be 75 to 90 liters.

Use your daypack as your carry-on luggage.

This daypack should weigh about 15 lbs.
It will contain your water,
snacks, rain gear, camera
and maybe an extra layer of clothing.

Your second bag is like a checked bag.
You will give this bag to a porter
and he will carry it from campsite to campsite.

Do I need to bring a water filter?
No, all water is provided.

Water is taken from nearby streams,
boiled, and filtered at lower elevations.

At higher elevations,
water is purified by chlorine tablets.

We recommend taking flavored powders
such as Gatorade or Nuun tablets
to cover the chlorine tablet taste.

How do I call home?
To communicate with those back home,
we recommend downloading WhatsApp.

You can call or text when you have wifi.

The other person also has to have WhatsApp on their phone.

The hotel and our safari vehicles have wifi.

There is no wifi or cellular on the Mountain.

Can we bring plastic bags to Tanzania?
The Tanzanian government has banned
single-use plastic bags like shopping bags.

You can still use Ziploc bags
for your loose items and to keep items dry.

Thank you for watching.
