Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy said the “biggest single concern” for officials is keeping the coronavirus from reaching non-metropolitan communities, where he says the risk of infection in isolated areas could have “devastating consequences”.
Appearing before a Senate estimates hearing on Wednesday, the nation’s chief doctor outlined the risks were heightened in regional areas when compared to their metropolitan counterparts.
“Probably the biggest single concern is trying to keep the disease out of communities, particularity non-metropolitan communities,” Mr Murphy said.
Northern Territory Indigenous Affairs Minister Selena Uibo said the risk of coronavirus "is on people's minds".
"People are concerned ... but I believe that the Northern Territory is very well placed and will continue to be well placed to be able to protect our urban and regional areas from the threat of coronavirus".
