Supreme Court Rejects Nirbhaya Gang-rape And Murder Convict Akshay Singh's Curative Plea

Supreme Court Rejects Nirbhaya Gang-rape And Murder Convict Akshay Singh's Curative Plea The Supreme Court rejected a curative petition filed by one of the four death-row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case. A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court considered the petition behind closed doors and rejected it Thursday afternoon. The petition was filed by Akshay Kumar Singh.

In its judgment, the five-judge bench of Justices NV Ramana, Arun Mishra, RF Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan said no case was made out in the curative petition filed by Akshay.

A curative petition is usually the final judicial remedy available to a person convicted by courts of law. Akshay Kumar Singh now has the option of seeking mercy from the President.

Akshay Kumar Singh is one of four convicts in the 2012 Nirbahya gang-rape and murder case. All four are on death row and are currently jailed at Delhi's Tihar jail.

Of the remaining three convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case, one -- Mukesh Singh -- has exhausted all his remedies. The Supreme Court had earlier rejected his curative petition, following which he filed a mercy plea before the President. The mercy plea was rejected, and later, a petition challenging the rejection was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

Vinay Sharma, another convict whose curative petition was also rejected by the Supreme Court, has pled for mercy; the petition is currently pending before the President. Pawan Gupta -- the fourth convict -- is yet to file a curative petition or a mercy plea.
