China Virus: Beijing's Empty Streets During the Coronavirus Outbreak

Bloomberg’s Peter Martin went for a run around his neighborhood in the Houhai district of Beijing, as it's locked down to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“It’s a weird sense of satisfaction not being on the inside of the roadblock," says Martin. "I’m not sure I like that in myself.”

In China’s capital, residents are required to showcase their entry permits to neighborhood committee members to enter or exit an area.

Across China, one of the most common restrictions has been to impose lockdowns on residential areas, with the provinces of Liaoning and Jiangxi, as well as major cities such as Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Chengdu and Suzhou restricting visitors and asking inhabitants to limit trips outside.
