Coronavirus patient transported in sealed box as WHO says outbreak 'not global emergency' yet The World Health Organization (WHO) says it is "too early" to declare the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in China a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also reiterated that the fact he is not declaring a PHEIC should not be taken as a sign that WHO does not think the situation is serious, or that they are not taking it seriously.

PHEIC is defined as an extraordinary event that is determined to constitute a public health risk to other states through the international spread of disease and to potentially require a coordinated international response.

In other developments, a desperate hunt was under way last night for 2,000 recent arrivals in the UK from China after at least nine people were tested for killer coronavirus.

They all arrived in Britain within the past two weeks from Wuhan, the centre of the deadly outbreak.
