Moon say S. Korea and Japan are important partners; Moon calls for complete retractions of trade curbs

President Moon Jae-in called on his Japanese counterpart to lift export curbs against Seoul.
During the rare summit they also agreed on the need to improve ties, frayed by historical and trade disputes.
Shin Se-min has our top story.
South Korea and Japan are "geographically, historically and culturally" the closest neighbors, said President Moon Jae-in, sitting across his Japanese counterpart on the sidelines of a tripartite summit with China in the Chinese city of Chengdu.
Marking his sixth summit with Prime Minister Abe, President Moon said that it is important to hold "frank dialogue" to improve bilateral relations
“Although the relationship has been briefly uncomfortable, the two sides can never be apart. I hope our two countries can start working together to come up with a wise solution in the near future.”
“I also wish to improve the important Japan-South Korea ties and hope to have a frank discussion today.”
Among the most pressing issues between the two sides stands their trade spat.
South Korea’s presidential spokesperson said Moon reportedly urged Abe to fully withdraw export curbs on Seoul,… as doing so will return their bilateral trade relationship to levels prior Tokyo's July export ban on three major industrial materials.
The leaders agreed that they were on different pages when it came to the trade issue and the event that triggered it, compensating Korean victims of japan's wartime forced labor.
“On the issue of Japan's wartime forced labor, the leaders confirmed they have different stances on the matter, but agreed to handle it through dialogue. In particular, they acknowledged the need to hold frequent summit meetings to swiftly solve the issue.”
On the security front,… the leaders agreed that the situation on the Korean Peninsula is “grave” and that both the bilateral and trilateral security cooperation with the U.S. is extremely critical.
Abe also reportedly requested South Korea’s backing on resolving the issue of Japanese nationals held captive by North Korea, abducted decades ago, to which Moon agreed contribute in the efforts.
“Although the leaders have not been able to root out their fundamental differences on how to handle their historical matters,… it’s not all empty hands.
The leaders’ meeting here in China is still viewed as a big step forward in leaving the door open for follow-up consultations.
