Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen is a Danish citizen, who has live in the UK for over 20 years. As co-chair of a Eurosceptic party, he campaigned to ensure that Denmark rejected the Maastricht Treaty in 1992.
Mister Overgaard-Nielsen was speaking during a debate on the EU budget in the European Parliament:
"The EU is seen by many as closed, bureaucratic and opaque, a place where citizens have no influence over the decisions being made.
Democracy is about people feeling that they have influence over decisions that affect their lives, and I believe this was the original intention of the principle of subsidiarity.
May I therefore suggest that this House switch off the auto-pilot, stop the ever-increasing centralisation, respect the principle of subsidiarity and let national governments decide whether decisions are better taken by them or whether to refer it to Brussels".
