More than half of the species and subspecies are endemic to the region, meaning they only live in this body of water. For example, 27 fish species can only be found in Baikal. But lately, the declining population of some of them has become a reason for serious concern. A couple of years ago, commercial fishing of omul in Baikal was banned and severe restrictions were introduced for amateur anglers.
