IF and WHETHER
If का प्रयोग condition (किसी शर्त) के sense में होता हैं। नीचे दिए गए वाक्यों को देखिये -
If you give me the book, I can prepare for the examination. अगर आप मुझे किताब देते हैं, तो में परीक्षा की तैयारी कर सकता हूँ।
I can go to London if I get the money. अगर मुझे पैसे मिले तो मैं लंदन जा सकता हूं।
If you tell me the truth, I will help you. अगर आप मुझे सच बताएँगे, तो मैं आपकी मदद करूंगा।
If he had not lied, this would never have happened. अगर उसने झूठ नहीं बोला होता, तो ऐसा कभी नहीं होता।
He will blame me if something happens to you. अगर आप को कुछ हुआ तो वह मुझे दोषी ठहराएगा।
इन सभी वाक्यों में आप देखेंगे कि if का प्रयोग एक condition के साथ हुआ है। मतलब अगर ऐसा हुआ तो वैसा होगा।
अब देखते है Whether के प्रयोग -
Whether का प्रयोग एक doubt के साथ होता है मतलब अगर कुछ होने में कोई शंका है या फिर doubt है तो हम Whether का प्रयोग करेंगे। कुछ example देखते हैं -
Tell me whether you are coming or not. मुझे बताओ कि तुम आ रहे हो या नहीं।
She has not informed whether they are joining for lunch or not. उसने यह जानकारी नहीं दी है कि वह लंच में शामिल हो रही हैं या नहीं।
इन दोनों ही वाक्यों में आप देखेंगे कि Whether का use एक शंका की स्थिति में किया गया है। पहले वाक्य में शंका है कि वह आएगा या नहीं। इसी तरह से दूसरे वाक्य में यह बात पूरी तरह से साफ़ नहीं है कि वह लंच में उनके साथ होगी या नहीं। यह एक बहुत ही interesting बात है कि अधिकतर समय जब भी whether का प्रयोग होता है, उसके साथ or को भी लगाया जाता है।
अब देखते है कि किस तरह whether का प्रयोग preposition के बाद किया जाता है - (whether is also used when one is presenting two alternatives without there being any conditions.)
prepositions के बाद -
I wanted to talk with you about whether your son is going to continue this class. मैं आपसे इस बारे में बात करना चाहता था कि क्या आपका बेटा इस क्लास को जारी रखने वाला है।
वाक्य के शुरुआत में जब clause एक subject की तरह काम करता हैं -
Whether you pass or fail is not my concern. चाहे आप पास हों या फेल मेरी चिंता नहीं है।
औपचारिक संदर्भ में whether का प्रयोग करना हमेशा बेहतर है।
अब जल्दी से देखते हैं कि if और whether में क्या अंतर हैं -
1) If का प्रयोग हमेशा एक condition (शर्त) के साथ किया जाता है जबकि whether का प्रयोग किसी भी शर्त के साथ नहीं किया जाता।
2) Prepositions - If कभी भी prepositions के बाद नहीं आता है जबकि Whether को prepositions के बाद लगाया जा सकता है।
3) Infinitive verbs - If का प्रयोग infinitive verb जो की to से शुरू होते हैं, उनके बाद नहीं किया जाता। Whether का प्रयोग infinitive verb जो की to से शुरू होते हैं के बाद करते हैं।
4) Clauses -If का प्रयोग वाक्य के शुरूआत में नहीं करते अगर clause, subject या complement की तरह काम करता हैं। जबकि whether का प्रयोग किया जाता है।
5) Two alternatives - If का प्रयोग सामान्यतः वाक्य में दो विकल्पों को प्रस्तुत नहीं करता। whether का प्रयोग जब विकल्प हो, उस समय किया जाता है।
