TOY – “Together Old and Young” is a national inter-generational community charity project aimed to prevent mental health issues among underprivileged children and youth (CAY) through expressive arts. Facilitated by trained senior volunteers who are semi- or fully retired throughout Peninsular Malaysia. This program will run from January till May 2020 by Hati Malaysia, a tax exempted non profit NGO. Beneficiaries of TOY include CAY from orphanages, children homes, refugee centres, special kids’ group and low-income communities. These CAY are more vulnerable to the risk of mental health issues due to past trauma, abuse or violence may exhibit the following symptoms and behaviours like increased aggression, inability to focus in school, hyperactivity, shyness with people, overreaction on small matters, etc.
Through TOY, we aim to help these underprivileged CAY to better cope with their emotions and daily struggles, improve their self-concept and become more positive whilst supporting older adult volunteers to have a sense of purpose, by being of service to the less fortunate. Research has shown the benefits of expressive arts in preventing mental health issues and reducing stress and anxiety.
HATI aims to raise RM120,000 to benefit 500 underprivileged children and youths in Peninsular Malaysia. All donations to this program are tax-exempted.
