An Unusual Start of the Lunar New Year ( Jan Wk 3 to Feb Wk 1 ’20)

An Unusual Start of the Lunar New Year ( Jan Wk 3 to Feb Wk 1 ’20) In this entry: We had no idea what was coming our way when we slowly prepared for Chinese New Year.

Together with the team we enjoyed a great team building evening with delicious hotpot and a movie-night. A fun evening, although we had to say good-bye to our dearest Hannah. After a great job completed at Handpicked she is going back to Europe.

On the 23rd of January, Jann Jann came back from a trip to Singapore, but it seems the Corona virus is becoming more and more serious. The very next morning Jann Jann decides to fly back to Singapore.

Phyl and Siem are staying in Shanghai for Chinese New Year.

But by the 25th it is clear that we all need to stay indoors as much as possible and we are gearing up for (what seems to be) a very unusual start of the new year.

Roads are empty, shopping malls deserted and small shops and restaurants are closing. Soon there is an announcement that the holiday is extended for another week and schools remain closed till March the 2nd.

Flights are being cancelled, hotels are empty and the situation in China is worrisome. Corona virus cases are increasing every day and the topic is taking up a great deal of our time.

The first few days some small outings where still possible, we visited a friend from Dubai who brought masks, hand-sanitizer and Dettol wipes, but soon going out appeared too risky.

Today, Feb 09, we have spend 17 days mostly at home - indoors.

Although Shanghai seems relatively safe compared to other regions and we can still walk Taqa twice a day, the situation is serious and feels unpredictable. Shanghai city, so quiet and so low in energy is something we have never seen before.

What do you do when you are at home, without much to do? Well… We cook, we cook a lot :-)

We try to make the best out of the situation while at home and cook our hearts out! From Mie Soto to Thai Curry and Mango sticky rice. We make Indonesian lemper, a key lime pie, Hunan Ziran ribs and create many more memorable food moments.

And while time goes by, guesses on the situation keep coming and going we just hope that this Corona virus episode in China is over very soon.
