In US news and current events today, this 6-year-old was taken to a mental health facility by police after she had a ‘tantrum’ at school.
Nadia King was reportedly held for 2 days despite her mother’s wishes. Body cam footage shows police removing the little girl from school. The officers themselves seem unconvinced the girl is any threat.
According to a social worker at Love Grove Elementary School, Nadia was involved in an incident during special needs class. The worker reported Nadia was ‘destroying school property’ and ‘attacking staff’
Under a Florida law called the Baker Act, authorities can force anyone to be detained for a psychiatric evaluation who is deemed to be a danger to themselves or others. According to the University of Florida Health, the law was intended for families and friends to help their loved ones who are impaired due to mental illness.
Nadia was taken to a behavioral health center, where she was held for 2 days and reportedly sedated with medication without her mother’s permission.
Nadia’s mother, Martina Falk, disclosed to media that her daughter had been previously diagnosed with ADHD and a mood disorder. Falk also said that the school never contacted her about the incident, and that she found out her daughter was detained through a third-party.
Nadia’s family have hired an attorney, and plan to pursue legal action to increase transparency about how the Baker Act is applied to young children.
