Hundreds arrested in India after more protests over citizenship law despite curfew

Hundreds of people have been arrested in India, with more than 1,500 taken into custody in the past 10 days, according to officials, as well as some 4,000 detained and then released amid ongoing protests against a proposed citizenship law.

The information comes as more demonstrations took place on Saturday despite curfew being imposed and other tough measures put in place aimed at shutting down the protests.

Many have voiced opposition to the proposed law by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with claims it would undermine the country's secular constitution while also discriminating against Muslims.

The law aims to grant citizenship to minorities of the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Christian, Jain and Parsi faiths from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh if they entered India on or before Dec. 31, 2014.
